CASE STUDY - IKEA IN MALAYSIA

Introduction

IKEA’s Foreign Direct Investment in Malaysia was a huge success. In 1999, the furniture giant’s distribution centre was established in Malaysia, acting as the regional hub for the firm’s Asia Pacific market, managing distribution processes to 16 IKEA stores in 7 Asia Pacific countries. In 2003, the largest IKEA store in Asia opened in Malaysia’s capital city Kuala Lumpur, which witnessed massive waves of excited Malaysian shoppers. In 2011 alone, the Malaysian IKEA store welcomed 5.7 million visitors and was the fourth most visited Ikea store in the world. With annual turnovers climbing significantly each year, a second Malaysian store will open in 2013 in Kuala Lumpur, and a third one in the next few years.
